Impact Type: Education & Cultural Revitalization
Overview
Kūlaniākea is a Hawaiian immersion preschool and kindergarten in Kāneʻohe, Oʻahu, dedicated to revitalizing language, culture, and values through early childhood education. Founded in 2015, Kūlaniākea offers a nature-based curriculum that integrates ʻike kūpuna (ancestral knowledge) into daily learning, fostering deep connections between keiki, ʻāina, and community.
Our Partnership Impact
• Supporting dual-language programs that preserve Hawaiian language while building academic readiness • Funding curriculum development that integrates ancestral knowledge with modern learning • Investing in early education programs that nurture cultural and intellectual growth • Supporting intergenerational learning that connects keiki with community mentors and practitioners
Partnership Story
Through HPF’s partnership, Kūlaniākea strengthens early education by embedding language and culture into the foundation of learning. One example is their development of educational materials inspired by the Kumulipo, a traditional chant that expresses creation and genealogy. This approach helps children understand their place in the world, fostering identity, confidence, and curiosity. With this grounding, keiki begin their educational journey rooted in purpose and connection to community.
