Polynesian Voyaging Society
Impact Type: Education, Community Development, & Cultural Revitalization
Overview
The Polynesian Voyaging Society (PVS) perpetuates the art and science of traditional voyaging and navigation while inspiring stewardship of the earth. Founded in 1973, PVS is best known for Hōkūleʻa, the double-hulled canoe that reignited the practice of wayfinding and helped spark a cultural renewal across Hawai‘i and the Pacific. Through education, voyaging, and community engagement, PVS nurtures leadership, environmental responsibility, and the courage to navigate with purpose and connection.
Our Partnership Impact
• Supporting the perpetuation of traditional voyaging and exploration • Funding educational programs that inspire care for people, culture, and planet • Investing in leadership development for youth and community • Supporting statewide initiatives that connect schools and communities
Partnership Story
The voyages of Hōkūleʻa and the other wa‘a of PVS embody both cultural legacy and global responsibility. HPF’s support helps advance the mission of mālama honua—caring for Island Earth—by connecting lessons of navigation, teamwork, and service to daily life. During the 2024 Statewide Sail, keiki and community members learned the discipline of wayfinding, stewardship of the sea, and the interconnectedness of all things. Through this partnership, the values of exploration, humility, and leadership continue to chart new courses for Hawai‘i’s future.
